What Is a Class 4 Licence?

In British Columbia, a Class 4 commercial licence allows you to drive vehicles for transporting passengers.

The Restricted licence permits up to 10 occupants including the driver. The Unrestricted licence allows

you to drive vehicles such as mini-buses and school buses carrying up to 25 passengers.

Class 4 Restricted vs Class 4 Unrestricted

The Class 4 Restricted licence allows you to operate taxis, ride hailing vehicles, limousines, ambulances, and certain passenger

vehicles for hire. It is commonly used by ride-hailing and taxi drivers and is designed for

drivers transporting passengers for commercial purposes.

The Class 4 Unrestricted licence expands the range of passenger vehicles you can operate and may be required for certain

commercial passenger transportation roles. While both Restricted and Unrestricted training cover the same core Class 4

fundamentals, Unrestricted training includes additional focus on passenger safety, vehicle inspections, and operating

larger passenger vehicles.

Preparing for the Class 4 Knowledge Test

The Class 4 knowledge test is administered by ICBC and assesses your understanding of commercial passenger transportation,

road safety, vehicle inspections, and driver responsibilities. To prepare effectively, review the appropriate ICBC study materials

and practise with sample questions that reflect real testing topics. Focus on passenger safety, vehicle inspections, safe driving

practices, and operating responsibilities. Regular practice can help build confidence and improve your readiness for the official

knowledge test.

Road Test Preparation

The Class 4 knowledge test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and a minimum score of 80% is required to pass. The test evaluates

To prepare effectively, review the appropriate ICBC study materials and practise with quality practice tests. The knowledge test can

now be taken daily, subject to ICBC testing availability and policies. If an additional attempt is required, an additional testing fee

may apply. Online testing options may also be available where applicable. Check with ICBC for the most current

testing procedures and availability.
